12: How To Use IARs to Drive Execution
Jul 19, 2023 Season 1 Episode 12
Steve Coughran

Welcome to the Business Strategy podcast. In this episode, Steve Coughran discusses a framework that allows teams and organizations to implement agile strategies that mitigate against market risk, differentiate from the competition, and drive desired outcomes. Initiatives, Actions, and Results, or IARs, are rooted in patterns and make strategy a habit by providing a methodical approach to assigning ownership and accountability, setting Initiatives to build advantages, designing Actions to advance Initiatives, and measuring Results. Steve acknowledges that strategy can be daunting and disheartening, often becoming convoluted, too ambitious (or not ambitious enough), and lacking ownership. However, IARs help alleviate these challenges by establishing strategic patterns and a streamlined process to simplify and optimize strategy. Steve emphasizes that ingrain strategy as a habit enables proactivity rather than reactivity. While creating and acting on an outsized strategy requires significant effort, smooth implementation is facilitated by making strategy habitual.

Through IARs, Steve explains how listeners can establish discipline and build strategic patterns that drive simplicity and ease in execution, define long-term Initiatives focused on building advantages for the organization and delivering value to the customer, align Actions to Initiatives, and measure progress and adjust accordingly. Tune in to this episode to learn more about how IARs can help you address the challenges of strategic planning and achieve your desired outcomes.
